2 major ways of detecting and dealing with spam comments on blogs

Though, there are different cases of spamming in the blogosphere, but today we will be concentrating on spam comments and the 2 major ways of detecting and dealing with them.

The comment sections of every blog are very important parts of blog where lots of things happen, therefore internet movers for example; Google always put their monitoring radar on that portion of blogs, in that it is even a parameter for blog ranking.

This section of blog can either lift a blog or bring the blog down within a twinkle of an eye

Often located at the bottom of blog pages, the comment section is the environment where blog owners and visitors interact and share thoughts together, give credits and discredits, engage in arguments and learn together thereby adding more values to already written article.

In fact it is the community section of every blog, located close to the bottom of a page yet is an eye catchy area of most blogs.

Every bloggers love comments on their blogs, because it sometimes tends to show how interesting and engaging a blog is. But a situation where as a blogger and out of your love for comments you then embrace and allow genuine comments to thrive together with spammy comments, then I tell you that you are in for a long thing.

Therefore, easily detecting and dealing with these spam comments can save you a great deal from that long thing.

Though, sometimes it is not easy detecting these spam comments, if you follow today’s piece very well, you will end up detecting and dealing with spam comments on your blog easier.

Now we will be highlighting the two main steps or ways of detecting and dealing with spam comments. Without wasting time, there we go;

= => For those on blogger, blogger has included a spam filter option on the comment section of your blogger dashboard. I know that lots of folks usually tend to pay less attention to this section of their blogger and some don’t even know a thing like that exists even as conspicuous as it is.

When you visit the comment section of your blogger dashboard located at the left hand side, clicking on the comment option will bring other options with Spam option inclusive. Now, clicking on the spam option, you should see lists of spam filtered comments that have even been published by you without knowing they are spam comments.

You can select them now and delete them from your blog, and when you do that, any reply(s) that are associated with the comments will also be deleted from your blog and it is highly recommended you do that to keep the comment sections of your blog spam free.

= => The second method of detecting those spam comments, even before publishing i.e. for those that set up comments moderation or even if you didn't set it up, when you see spam comments, you should be able to detect that they are spams See how to know;

There are always special characteristics of spam comments. You can even decide to use this opportunity now to check out the comments sections of your blog to ascertain what I am about telling you.

Spam comments mostly start by eulogizing and making the original author of the article happy and end up referring you to another page mostly the advertiser page. Again, just try relating spam comments to topics of discussion you will notice that they are always off points without anything relating to the topic being discussed.

Now, whenever you see off topic comments like that, know they are spam comments and it will pay you to delete them as quickly as possible. Most of them are bots that have been programmed by companies to help them in advertising their products whenever similar topics on their products are being discussed.

With the above methods of detecting spams, I believe you can now detect spam comments on your blog and deal with them appropriately. Don’t ever wait for Google sledge hammer to hit you first before curing spams on your blog comment sections.  “To be fore warned is to be fore armed”.

  1. Hi Edwin,

    Almost every blogger in the blogsosphere wants huge engagement on their blog, but one great has always been an headache for every blogger, which is "SPAM COMMENTS".

    I love the way you handle this article topic, but the main fact here is that bloggers on google blogspot platform have nothing to worry about because google has automatically add SPAM FILTER to it's platform.

    All this comment spam headache is mainly for bloggers on WORDPRESS/JOOMLA. But the easiest way to quickly eradicate spam comments is through the INSTALLATION of DISQUS.

    Disqus is the simplest and the most conducive commenting system out there. it reduce spam plugins and also filter out spam comment easily.

    Thanks for this wonderful post and have a nice weekend

  5. Spam comments comes in with various degree of magnitude. Some really come close real comments but in reality, they are not.

    I receive lots of spammy comments and in as much as I have installed a plugin to handle those checks, spam comments always beat it.

    1. Emmanuel you are absolutely right sometimes those spam comments are smarter than the plugin and other means we use in checkmating them, so they sometimes still find their ways in the comment sections by beating spam filters.

      In other words, manual check is also encouraged from time to time to scan for those that had made their ways in by easily identifying them with the second method I gave above and deleting them. Thank you Emmanuel for dropping by and do have a nice day.

  6. The comments from different readers are pretty important in a blog.

    Every opinion, every suggestion, every word written on the comment box, whether it be a criticism or praise, it’s important. You wouldn’t want it all to be mixed up with spams.

    Spams are pretty annoying, all bloggers, even just simple social media users hate them.

    Awesome job, Edwin. Thanks for sharing us this piece.

    There are also a lot of anti-spam add-on’s that help remove those unwanted spammers.

    Have a nice day.
